Conifer Mine Discharge Treatment System

The Conifer Treatment System is a passive treatment system located on a mine discharge in Beaver Run Watershed in Beaver Township. The original system was built in 1998. The water chemistry changed in 1999. The ferric iron and aluminum in the discharge led to premature plugging of the ALD. A project to regrade the limestone in the ALD, and fill a portion of the settling pond with limestone to create a large limestone bed (FeAlMn bed) was completed in July, 2011. Through funding from the Redbank Creek Watershed Trust, maintenance on the system is done to unclog the bed and restore permeability when needed. The District continues to do water monitoring to access how the chemistry of the water has changed with treatment
